Mesotherapy Introduction

What is Micro-dermabrasion?

Micro-dermabrasion (MDA) has been used to great effect in the medical field over the last twenty years. Plastic surgeons and dermatologists have been able to improve the skin’s condition and to stimulate its own regenerative processes. Controlled micro-dermabrasion is a modern technique of a gentle mechanical peeling process which can control specific skin conditions such as Acne, Scar Tissue, Premature Ageing and Pigmentation. It restores the delicate balance of healthy functioning skin cells needed for a clear and radiant skin, and the dead corneocytes required for the protection of the skin from the environment.

Initially developed in the 1940’s in Italy. The main system was imported from the States using crystals. In the 1990’s Crystal Clear was the leading brand of machine, and diamond headed versions followed.

In a healthy skin there should be a ratio of 65 -70 % living epidermal cells with 25 – 30 % dead corneocytes, sitting on the top, waiting to be sloughed off through friction in the course of the day. However, in older skins damaged skins with scarring and the ageing process, this ration can change and the dead corneocytes can be up to 50 % of the skins surface. This leaves the skin looking dull and flat, with poor healing qualities, because the newer cells are not able to come through.

The epidermis layers also become tougher and thick with the exposure to too much ultra violet (UV) light and weather beaten. Unprotected skin becomes coarse and thick, trying to protect itself against the elements.

UV light, cold, heat, wind and environmental pollution combined with poor diet, alcohol, negative stress and hormonal fluctuations can leave the skin prematurely aged in appearance and the acid mantle disturbed and unable to function properly.

Healthy skin has a renewal cycle of approximately 28 days, but this turnover can be slowed down by up to four months through poor lifestyle and poor skincare routine. The micro-dermabrasion system of exfoliation can stimulate the skin to heal and repair itself through the removal of the dead skin cells and this then allows the active, moisturising and boosting products to penetrate and soothe the skin. The results are instantaneous – the client is very happy with the results and you will find that they want to book a course of treatments!

A corneocyte is a protein complex that is made of tiny threads of keratin. The keratin can hold large amounts of water between the fibres/threads. The stratum corneum contains about 12-16 layers of corneocytes and each corneocyte has a mean thickness of 1 micrometer, depending on age, location on the body and if they have been exposed to (UV)

As a result of the skins renewal cycle slowing down, dry skin, fine lines and wrinkles, age spots and loss of elasticity may all be noticed. In order to improve these skin problems or in order to slow their appearance in the first place, the skin renewal cycle must be stimulated.

Here at Andrea Lamport Pro Skincare we use the diamond method of micro-dermabrasion, this consists of a rotating flat stainless-steel head with diamond chips embedded in it. It works at different speeds and in different directions. This is worked over the area with a reasonable pressure within the client’s comfort and skins sensitivity beginning with the neck area.
